Abstract
This study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-obesity activities of acai berry juice and extracts. The total polyphenol, total flavonoid, and total sugar contents of AHE (hot-water extract of acai berry) were 35.04 g/100 g, 26.13 g/100 g, and 36.82 g/100 g, respectively. The total anthocyanin content of AEE (70% ethanol extract of acai berry) was 141.73 mg/L. The DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and FRAP activity of AHE at 1,000 ¥ìg/mL were 59.40%, 83.10%, and 2.03 mM, respectively. The ¥á-amylase, ¥á-glucosidase, and lipase inhibitory activity of AHE at 1,000 ¥ìg/mL were 84.03%, 92.10%, and 31.85%, respectively. AHE had better regeneration effects against oxidative stress in L-132 cells than the other extracts. Furthermore, AHE suppressed adipocyte differentiation, lipid accumulation, and the free glycerol content, and triggered lipolysis on MDI treated 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Thus, in addition to AHE and AEE, AJ also has antioxidant activity and inhibits adipocyte in 3T3-L1 cells, resulting in reduced lipid accumulation, reduced free glycerol release, and increased glucose uptake.
